GearLever Turbo
A small companion utility for Gear Lever that checks AppImages for updates in parallel and downloads them with aria2.

01Overview
GearLever Turbo is a small Python companion utility for Gear Lever, the Linux application I use to manage AppImages. The idea was to make checking and downloading updates for multiple AppImages faster by handling those operations concurrently and using aria2 for downloads. It uses Gear Lever's existing application metadata rather than trying to replace the app itself.
02Features
- Discover AppImages already managed by Gear Lever
- Check multiple applications for updates concurrently
- Download updates using aria2
- Work alongside Gear Lever instead of replacing its integration and management features
03Architecture
The utility reads the existing information Gear Lever keeps about managed AppImages, checks the available updates, and handles downloads separately from Gear Lever's normal interface. Python is used for the orchestration, while aria2 handles the downloading. Keeping it as a companion utility means Gear Lever can continue to manage desktop integration, icons, and application settings.
04Challenges
Working with another application's data
The utility needs to use Gear Lever's existing information instead of maintaining its own separate list of applications. That makes it useful without asking users to configure everything again, but it also means being careful about what data it relies on. I wanted the tool to stay focused on update checking and downloading rather than becoming another AppImage manager.
05Status
This is a small experimental utility, not a replacement for Gear Lever. The code was AI-authored, which I disclose in the repository, so I don't present it as a hand-written programming project. I include it here because the problem it addresses and the workflow behind it are relevant to my interest in Linux and developer utilities.
